Lesson 3

Splitting Pots (50/50)

Handling chopped pots and distributing odd chips correctly.

Splitting the Pot

When two players have the same winning hand strength, the pot is divided (chopped).

The 50/50 Split

When two players tie, the pot is divided equally. For example, if the pot is 150 and two players tie, each gets 75.

The Odd Chip Rule

If a pot cannot be split perfectly evenly, the odd chip goes to the player in the worst position (closest to the left of the button) in High games.

Example: Pot is 25 chips. Split is 12 each. The remaining 1 chip goes to the first active player to the left of the dealer button.

Key Takeaways

  • Split the pot equally first.
  • Odd chip goes to the player closest to the left of the button (High games).
  • Do not make change from the rake box.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

  • Giving the odd chip to the highest stack.
  • Splitting unevenly by accident.
Worked Example
Pot is 25. SB and BB split.
Both get 12. The odd chip (1) goes to the SB because they are immediately left of the button.
