Lesson 2

The Rule of 2 and 4

A shortcut to calculate your winning percentage in seconds.

Don't do complex math at the table. Use this shortcut to estimate your equity (chance of winning).

On the Flop: Multiply Outs x 4

If you have a Flush Draw (9 outs):

9 x 4 = ~36% Equity

On the Turn: Multiply Outs x 2

Only one card left. Flush Draw (9 outs):

9 x 2 = ~18% Equity

Key Takeaways

  • Count your 'outs' (cards that improve your hand to a winner).
  • Multiply by 4 on the Flop.
  • Multiply by 2 on the Turn.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

  • Counting cards that might give you a second-best hand.
  • Forgetting to multiply.
Worked Example
Your Hand
Jd10d
The Board (Turn)
4d5dKs2c
You are on the Turn. You have a Flush Draw (9 diamonds left in deck) + Open Ended Straight Draw (8 cards: 3s and 6s). Total 15 Outs (minus overlaps, let's say 15).
15 x 2 = 30% Equity.
