Lesson 1
What is a Poker Solver?
Understand the tool that changed poker forever.
Imagine a chess computer, but for poker. A Solver is a software that calculates the mathematically "perfect" strategy for any given hand.
It plays against itself millions of times until it finds a strategy that cannot be exploited by any other strategy. This is called GTO (Game Theory Optimal).
Why use it?
- To find the baseline "correct" play.
- To spot leaks in your own game.
- To understand *why* certain hands are good bluffs.
Key Takeaways
- • Solvers calculate unexploitable strategies (GTO).
- • They assume your opponent is also playing perfectly.
- • Humans use solvers to study, not to play during a game (which is cheating).
⚠️ Common Mistakes
- • Thinking you need to play exactly like a computer.
- • Using a solver while playing online (DraftKings, PokerStars, etc. will ban you).
Worked Example
You ask a solver: 'I have Ace-King on a 9-8-2 flop. What do I do?'
The solver might say: 'Bet 60% of the time, Check 40% of the time.' It gives you frequencies, not just one answer.
